I might do this with eggs anyway for seedlings that we're doing for a new veg patch. Can I get involved with Cooking for Children and if so how? sorry I'm new to blogging. First of all, it was Easter and I would be dyeing eggs anyway, so rather than use chemical dyes and then probably eventually throw them away, I put both yolks/whites (in the souffle) and shells to use. Secondly, eggshells help aerate soil and are also chock-full of calcium and other nutrients that will get absorbed by leafy greens. And lastly, using biodegradable organic material to cultivate seedlings is way better for the environment than those little plastic crates! I've seen the ceramic eggshells...but why would you buy the ceramic ones (which are probably chemically bleached white) when you could use the real thing for free? Especially because almost all plants will need more rootspace than an egg offers and will have to be transplated eventually...so you can't even reuse the ceramic--you break it off and throw it away.Kate Crofthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14731906058751863179noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22091550.post-1145979389364881452006-04-25T11:36:00.000-04:002006-04-25T11:36:00.000-04:00Neat. I've seen ceramic pre-seeded eggs (<A HREF="http://www.elsewares.com/commerce/Egglings_MPD324.html" REL="nofollow">Egglings</A>) but not homemade egg planters. Is there some sort of benefit to planting seedlings in an eggshell or is it more for the cute presentation?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22091550.post-1145930245291582202006-04-24T21:57:00.000-04:002006-04-24T21:57:00.000-04:00So pretty! I contemplated making those, but opted for the little pots instead. (other readers: cascarones are blown-out eggs filled with beans, confetti, or similar and gently tapped on a person's head. If the egg breaks, it means blessings or good fortune...alternatively, the eggs can be thrown, drive-by confetti style.)Kate Crofthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14731906058751863179noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22091550.post-1145406782966975962006-04-18T20:33:00.000-04:002006-04-18T20:33:00.000-04:00Wow!Everything about that is gorgeous.
